The Martial Arts are a collection of combat oriented, or once combat focused, systems that can be found virtually everywhere in the world--not just in Asia. Unlike pure brawling, the martial arts are systemized and contain a higher knowledge, as well as many of them actually being elegant and artistic. Another thing that makes the martial arts different is the cultivation of all of one's self: mind, body and spirit. Meaning, we not only train our bodies, but we also sharpen our minds and bring peace to our spirit. Which, is why self-defense is not the only thing we are training for when we practice a martial art. It is a way of life.
Some of the benefits of correct martial arts training:
Sharpening of mind
Focus
Coolness and calmness of mind under stressful situations
The ability to defend yourself if need be
Physical Fitness
Confidense, but also humility
Self-Discipline
Peaceful sense of self
Higher philisophical understanding (after many years of hard, thoughtful training)
Improved reflexes, coordination, balance, speed and strength
